Art Team

All students in grades 9-12         

Mrs Draeger

Students of any high school age level who are motivated to create an art piece outside of school.  A group of students prepare for four months on their own by creating an artwork.  The artwork must fit specific criteria.  They will go to UW Stevens Point for regional competition working both individually and as a team.  The goal is to move on to state competition in Madison.  November through the beginning of April.

 

Band

Jazz Ensemble

23 students in grades 9-12

Mr. Forton

Learn and perform music within the Jazz idiom including improvisation.  Includes HHS band concerts and clinics throughout the state.  All school year; 7:00 am Tuesday & Thursday.

 

Pep Band

80 students in grades 9-12

Prepare and perform at 12 winter basketball games

 

Pit Orchestra

20 students in grades 9-12

Rehearse and perform for the high school musical.  Times and dates vary from week to week after school September – November.

 

Solo/Ensemble

150 students in grades 9-12

Sign-up to perform solo’s or ensembles which include Brass Choir, Woodwind Choir, Flute Choir, Clarinet Choir, Percussion Ensemble, Saxophone Choir, and various solos, duets, trios & quartets. 7:00am Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday.  Also times after school December-May.  Performs at District & State Solo/Ensemble Festival.

Musical Theater

All  students grades 9-12

A broadway musical with singing, acting, dancing, costumes, orchestra, etc.  Audition required.  September-November.  Practice times vary.

 

Show Choir

All students grades 9-12

Mrs. A. Schmidt

A choir that sings and dances to pop, swing, jazz and other popular music.  They perform at community performances and solo/ensemble.  Audition required. September-May.  Practice times vary.

 

Solo/Ensemble

70-100 choir students enrolled in class Semester 2

Optional event—students may select solos, duets, trios, quartets from the state list to perform for a judge at the Bay District Festival.  Students earn medals and may advance to state.  Rehearsals begin in January.  The District festival is held in March or April.  The State festival is held in May

 

 

Debate

All students grades 9-12

There are three debate activities.  Policy debate (August-December): where teams of four work on both sides of a topic.  Lincoln-Douglas (all year): where individual students debate both sides of a value topic.  Student Congress (January-April): where individuals debate as a legislative body.

 

Diversity Club

All students grades 9-12

Mrs. Koss/ Mrs. Wilke

Students interested in working for tolerance and acceptance of diversity in human beings at HHS, the school district and in the wider community. This is a grass roots group started in the winter of 2001 with goals of making people more aware of the diversity of our district/community and encouraging tolerant behavior and language toward that diversity.  Our mission includes outreach activities both within the school, district and toward the community.  “Drop in” meetings may be held on Tuesdays.

 

Environmental Club

20 students in grades 9-12

Club is offered to students interested in working on projects aimed at helping the environment.  All year activity.

 

Forensics

All students grades 9-12

Mrs. Lohrenz

There are over 20 categories to compete in.  Roughly half of the categories focus on speech skills while the other half deal with acting and interpretation of literature.  A focus program for those interested in extensive experience will run from August-April.  For those interested in a more basic involvement, the season will start in November through April.

 

 

German

Open to German Class Students Only

German students participating in the every other year school exchange with Germany. Three week travel/educational trip to German partner school when school year ends.  Attend German school, stay with host family, tour with group. Host German partner student during their stay in Hortonville two weeks in October.

 

Math Team

All  students grades 9-12

Students compete against other schools in math events by doing problems from a variety of math topics.

 

Mock Trial

6-10 students in grades 9-12

Mr. Sommers

Designed to give students a better idea of how the legal system works by requiring them to put together a legal case proposed by the Wisconsin Bar Association, the governing board for lawyers practicing in the state.  Participation requires students interested in acting as lawyers and/or witnesses.  Team members work together to prepare questions for witnesses, opening and closing arguments and questions for cross examination of their “opponents” witnesses.  The district competition is held in February at the Outagamie County Courthouse.  If the team wins district competition, it then competes in Regional and State competitions.  Late October—February.  Preparation after school may be necessary.

 

National Honor Society

Juniors and Seniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and approved by a faculty council.

In academic organization based on the qualities of scholarship, service leadership and character, and dedicated to upholding these values through community service.  All year—involved in various service projects throughout the year.

 

PAWS

(Peers Assisting With Students) - Students apply as freshmen

Mrs. Hermus

The group provides services for entire high school student body.  The students selected for this peer helper program receive training in communication skills and methods of helping fellow students who need a listening ear or a referral to guidance or an outside agency.  They conduct many projects to improve the school environment and to educate younger students. Participation is a four year commitment. 

 

Pep Club

 All students 9-12

Meet three times for each of the eight sports to organize Parents’ nights Cheerleaders are required to be a Pep Club member.

 

Ski Club

All students in grades 9-12

Mrs. St. John

At least four trips to Nordic Mountain per ski season.  One possible trip to the Upper Peninsula, Saturday only, one day trip.  Middle January—Early March

 

Spanish

Spanish III, IV, V students who meet requirements

Mrs. Horneck

This is a travel program to Mexico, Spain, Costa Rica and Peru.  Students will experience first-hand the people, places and culture of the country as well as utilize and enhance their skills in Spanish.  Participants will stay with a family, learn how they live, use Spanish, visit famous sites, and, in some programs, even attend classes.  The trip is usually during Spring Break week.

 

Spring Play

Approximately 10-20 students in grades 9-12

Perform a non-musical play for the public.  Auditions are required.  Rehearsals begin in January, performance in February.

 

 

Student Council

Open to all students, this student- run organization plans and runs events, fundraisers and other special activities at school such as homecoming festivities, dances, and school spirit activities. Officers and representatives are elected by student council members in the spring of each year.  Members attend meeting and leadership workshops at various times throughout the year, either during or after school.

Students help to maintain a positive school climate.  They provide activities for students to increase their resiliency and assist in development of leadership roles.

 

Yearbook

Students in grades 10-12 by application

Mrs. Stangel

Yearbook is both a class and co curricular activity.  Students learn the basics of yearbook production and desktop publishing.  Students are responsible for the production of the high school yearbook. Requires one year commitment
